Bad Drain Odours: Where Do They Come From and How to Eliminate Them

A sewer smell in the kitchen or bathroom is unpleasant and often worrying. Good news: in most cases, it's easy to fix.

Bad drain odours are not just a comfort issue. They can signal a more serious problem. Let's first identify the cause to apply the right solution.

1. DRIED-OUT TRAP

The most common and simplest cause to fix. The trap (the U-shaped bend under each fixture) contains water that acts as a barrier against sewer odours. If this water evaporates, odours rise up.

When this happens:

  • Fixture not used for several weeks (guest room, secondary WC)
  • Return from holiday
  • Unoccupied property
  • High heat accelerating evaporation

Immediate solution:

Run water for 30 seconds in each fixture. The trap refills and the odour disappears instantly.

Prevention: Before an extended absence, pour a little vegetable oil into each trap. It floats on the water and slows evaporation.

2. FORMING BLOCKAGE

Organic residue (food, hair, soap) accumulates and begins to decompose. The odour often precedes the complete blockage.

Associated signs:

  • Drainage gradually slowing down
  • Stronger odour when water drains
  • Small air bubbles rising up

Solution:

  1. Clean the grate and remove visible debris
  2. Pour baking soda + vinegar (1/2 cup each)
  3. Leave for 30 minutes
  4. Rinse with hot water

If the odour persists, the blockage is probably deeper and requires professional intervention.

3. FAULTY SEAL

The connection between the sanitary fixture and the drain must be airtight. If the seal is worn or poorly installed, odours seep through.

How to check:

  • Run your hand under the trap: moisture = likely leak
  • Look at the base of the toilet: moisture traces?
  • Inspect visible connections: are they properly tightened?

Solution:

Tighten the connections if possible. If the odour persists, the seal needs to be replaced. For toilets, the wax ring at the base may need replacement (professional intervention recommended).

4. INSUFFICIENT VENTILATION

Your drainage system must be ventilated. A vent pipe usually runs up to the roof to balance pressures and evacuate gases.

Signs of a ventilation problem:

  • Frequent gurgling noises when water drains
  • Traps emptying by themselves (suction effect)
  • Odours appearing when another fixture is used

Possible causes:

  • Blocked vent (leaves, bird nest, snow)
  • Undersized or missing vent
  • Modifications to the system without adapting ventilation

Checking and repairing ventilation generally requires a professional.

5. BACTERIAL BIOFILM

A slimy film of bacteria can develop on the walls of drains, especially in damp, poorly cleaned areas.

Characteristics:

  • "Musty" or mouldy smell, more than sewer odour
  • Presence of small black flies (drain flies)
  • Slimy surface around the drain opening

Solution:

  1. Clean mechanically: scrub the drain opening and the beginning of the pipe
  2. Pour boiling water to kill bacteria
  3. Treat with baking soda + vinegar
  4. Repeat weekly until it disappears

6. MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM

Sometimes, the odour signals a more serious structural problem:

  • Cracked drain pipe : Sewer gases seep through the crack
  • Sewer system backflow : Problem with the municipal sewer network
  • Full or faulty septic tank : For houses with individual sewage treatment

Call a professional if:
The odour is present in several rooms

The odour is getting progressively worse

You notice water or waste backflow

WHEN IT'S MORE SERIOUS

A camera inspection may be necessary to identify the exact source of the problem in complex cases. It allows you to see the internal condition of the drains and locate cracks, blockages or ventilation defects.

ODOUR PREVENTION

  • Run water in rarely used fixtures (once a week)
  • Clean drain openings and grates regularly
  • Monthly treatment with baking soda + vinegar
  • Don't throw organic waste into the sink
