A clogged sink always happens at the worst time. Before rushing to buy harsh chemical products, try these natural methods. They work on most common clogs and are gentle on your pipes.

WHY AVOID CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

Chemical drain cleaners may seem convenient, but they cause several problems our technicians see every day:

  • Pipe corrosion : Caustic products attack joints and weaken pipes, especially older PVC ones.
  • Limited effectiveness : They dissolve grease but fail on solid clogs (hair, compacted food debris).
  • Health hazard : Toxic fumes, burns on contact. Never mix with other products.
  • Environmental impact : These products end up in wastewater and disrupt treatment plants.

METHOD 1: BAKING SODA + WHITE VINEGAR

The best-known method, and for good reason: it works on 70% of minor clogs. The chemical reaction creates a fizzing action that dislodges residue.

What you need:

  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  • 1 litre of boiling water

Steps:

  1. Remove standing water from the sink with a cup or sponge
  2. Pour the baking soda directly into the drain
  3. Add the white vinegar – it will foam, that’s normal
  4. Plug the drain and let it sit for at least 30 minutes
  5. Flush with boiling water

Pro tip: Repeat the process 2-3 times if the first attempt is not successful. Some clogs require several passes.

METHOD 2: BOILING WATER ALONE

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Boiling water dissolves grease and may be enough for light clogs.

Procedure:

  1. Boil 2 litres of water
  2. Pour slowly in 2-3 batches, waiting a few seconds between each
  3. Let it sit for 5 minutes
  4. Test the drainage with tap water

Caution: Do not use on old or weakened PVC pipes. Boiling water can warp pipes. Use very hot (not boiling) water if in doubt.

METHOD 3: THE PLUNGER

The basic tool, often underestimated. A good plunger resolves most mechanical clogs.

Effective technique:

  1. Block the overflow of the sink with a damp cloth (important!)
  2. Fill the sink with 5 cm of water to create a seal
  3. Place the plunger flat over the drain
  4. Pump vigorously 15-20 times
  5. Pull the plunger off sharply

If you hear a suction noise followed by water draining, it worked. Otherwise, repeat several times.

METHOD 4: THE DRAIN SNAKE

For more stubborn clogs located further down the pipe. A drain snake is a flexible cable with a brush or hook at the end.

How to use:

  1. Remove the trap under the sink (place a basin underneath)
  2. Insert the snake into the pipe
  3. Push it forward while turning the handle clockwise
  4. When you feel resistance, you have reached the clog
  5. Keep turning to break up or hook the clog
  6. Gently pull out and clean

Manual drain snakes are available at hardware stores for 15-30 euros. A worthwhile investment if you have recurring clogs.

METHOD 5: SALT + BAKING SODA

A more abrasive variant of the baking soda method, effective on built-up grease deposits.

Mixture:

  • 1/2 cup of coarse salt
  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1 litre of boiling water

Application:

  1. Mix salt and baking soda
  2. Pour into the drain
  3. Let it sit overnight (ideal)
  4. Flush with boiling water in the morning

WHEN TO CALL A PROFESSIONAL

These methods work on light to moderate clogs. It is time to call if:

  • Natural methods do not work after 2-3 attempts
  • Water backs up through another fixture (sign of a deep clog)
  • Foul odours persist despite your efforts
  • The clog keeps coming back (possible structural issue)
  • Multiple fixtures are affected at the same time

In these cases, professional drain cleaning with an electric snake or high-pressure jetting is required. We arrive within 30 minutes anywhere in Luxembourg.

SUMMARY

  • Always start with boiling water (the simplest)
  • Try baking soda + vinegar as a second option
  • The plunger remains the most effective tool for mechanical clogs
  • The drain snake for deeper clogs
  • If nothing works after 3 attempts: call a professional
