Standing in 10 cm of water every shower? That's a sign of a developing blockage. Let's identify the cause to apply the right solution.

A slow shower drain is one of the most common plumbing problems. In 80% of cases, it's a blockage you can fix yourself. But first, you need to know what it's made of.

1. HAIR BUILDUP

The number 1 cause of shower blockages. An adult loses an average of 50 to 100 hairs per day. A good portion ends up in the drain.

How it forms a blockage:

Hairs catch on irregularities in the pipe, then trap soap and other residue. Within a few weeks, a compact ball forms just below the drain cover.

Solution:

  • Remove the drain cover and pull out visible hair with your fingers (gloves recommended)
  • Use a small hook or pliers to reach deeper
  • Rinse with hot water

Prevention: Install a hair catcher (2-5 EUR at hardware stores). Clean after each shower.

2. SOAP RESIDUE

Bar soap, shower gel, and especially shampoo leave greasy residue that builds up on pipe walls.

The problem:

This residue is sticky. It traps hair, skin cells, and forms a greasy layer that gradually narrows the pipe diameter.

Solution:

  • Pour 1 liter of boiling water to soften deposits
  • Follow with a baking soda + vinegar mix (1/2 cup each)
  • Let sit for 30 minutes then rinse with hot water

3. LIMESCALE DEPOSITS

Luxembourg's water is moderately hard. Limescale gradually builds up and forms a whitish crust inside the pipes.

Telltale signs:

  • White marks around the drain
  • Flow decreasing gradually over several months
  • Pipes feeling "rough" to the touch

Solution:

  • Pour hot (not boiling) white vinegar directly into the drain
  • Let sit for at least 1 hour (ideally overnight)
  • Rinse thoroughly with hot water

For heavy deposits, repeat the process several days in a row.

4. CLOGGED TRAP

The trap is the U-shaped bend under your shower. It holds water to prevent odors from rising. It's also where deposits accumulate.

Access depending on your setup:

  • Shower with access panel : Unscrew the panel under the tray and access the trap directly
  • Walk-in shower : The trap is often accessible under the central drain cover
  • Older shower : The trap may be built-in and inaccessible without dismantling

Cleaning an accessible trap:

  1. Place a basin or cloths under the trap
  2. Unscrew the inspection cap or the entire trap
  3. Empty the residue (warning: it smells bad)
  4. Clean with a brush and soap
  5. Reassemble while checking the seals

5. DEEPER PROBLEM

If drainage remains slow despite your efforts, the blockage may be located further down the pipe system.

Signs of a deeper problem:

  • Other fixtures (sink, bathtub) are also affected
  • Odors rising from the shower
  • Gurgling sounds can be heard
  • Water sometimes backs up instead of draining

In these cases, the blockage is probably in the main drain line. A professional drain snake or hydro jetting will be needed.
