An overflowing toilet is a nightmare. Dirty water rising, stress building up. Take a breath. We will guide you step by step to limit the damage and fix the problem.

OVERFLOW EMERGENCY

If the water keeps rising and is about to overflow:

  1. Do not flush again
  2. Shut off the water immediately (valve behind the toilet)
  3. Call us: response within 30 minutes

THE 3 IMMEDIATE STEPS

These 3 actions must become second nature. They prevent 90% of the damage during a toilet overflow.

1

STOP FLUSHING

Do not touch the button. Each flush adds more water.

2

SHUT OFF WATER

Shut-off valve behind or under the toilet. Turn right.

3

PROTECT

Mops, towels around the base to absorb water.

SHUT OFF THE WATER SUPPLY

This is THE priority. As long as water is flowing in, the level can keep rising.

Where to find the shut-off valve?

  • Behind the toilet : The most common location. Small valve on the supply line. Turn clockwise.
  • Under the cistern : On some models, the valve is under the wall-mounted cistern.
  • Main valve : If you cannot find the dedicated valve, shut off the main water supply for the flat (often in the utility cupboard).

Tip: Locate your shut-off valve BEFORE an emergency. Check now, while everything is fine.

PROTECT THE FLOOR

Toilet water contains bacteria. You need to limit its spread and make cleaning easier.

Immediate actions:

  • Place towels or mops around the base of the toilet
  • If you have bin bags, create a barrier around the area
  • Open the window for ventilation (odours and moisture)
  • Move rugs, bathrobes and absorbent items away

TRY THE PLUNGER

If the water level has stabilised and is no longer overflowing, you can try the plunger. It works on about 60% of toilet clogs.

Technique for toilets:

  1. Use a flange plunger (toilet-specific model with a rubber rim)
  2. Insert it into the bowl, rubber side down
  3. Make sure it is submerged (add water if needed)
  4. Pump vigorously 15-20 times
  5. Pull off sharply to create suction

If the water suddenly drains, you have dislodged the clog. Do a small flush to check everything drains normally.

WHAT NOT TO DO

In a panic, some reflexes make things worse:

  • Flush repeatedly

Each flush adds 6-9 litres of water. You speed up the overflow.

  • Pour chemical products

Drain cleaners do nothing against a real mechanical clog. They just make the water toxic.

  • Use a coat hanger or sharp object

Risk of scratching the enamel or worse, piercing the outlet seal.

  • Wait it out

A clog does not dissolve on its own. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.

WHEN IT IS A PROFESSIONAL EMERGENCY

Some situations go beyond DIY. Call a professional immediately if:

  • Water keeps rising despite the valve being closed (problem on the main stack)
  • Multiple fixtures are affected (toilet + shower + sink = clog in the main drain)
  • Sewage backs up into the bathtub or shower
  • The plunger does not work after several attempts
  • Very strong odours even without visible overflow
