Drain Snake vs High Pressure: Which Method to Choose?

Two professional techniques dominate drain cleaning: the electric drain snake and high-pressure hydro jetting. Each has its strengths. We explain when to use which.

When home methods are no longer enough, two professional techniques come into play: the electric drain snake and high-pressure hydro jetting. The choice depends on the nature of the blockage, its location, and the condition of your pipes.

THE ELECTRIC DRAIN SNAKE

How it works

The electric drain snake is a flexible metal cable driven by a motor. At the end, a rotating head (spiral, brush, or blade) breaks up the blockage through direct mechanical action.

Ideal for:

  • Solid blockages : Clumped hair, roots, objects fallen into the drain
  • Narrow pipes : Sinks, basins, showers (diameter 32-50mm)
  • Localized blockages : When the obstruction location is known
  • Fragile pipes : Old or damaged pipes

Advantages:

  • Direct mechanical action on the blockage
  • Works on all types of blockages
  • Less expensive than high pressure
  • Suitable for small diameters

Limitations:

  • Does not clean pipe walls
  • Limited range (15-20m max)
  • Less effective on grease

HIGH-PRESSURE JETTING (HYDRO JETTING)

How it works

A very high-pressure water jet (150-300 bar) is projected into the pipe through a special nozzle. The jet's power breaks up the blockage AND cleans the pipe walls along the way.

Ideal for:

  • Grease blockages : Hot water under pressure emulsifies and flushes away grease deposits
  • Main drain lines : Kitchen drain, building main stack, sewer connection (diameter 100mm+)
  • Distant blockages : The hose can reach 50-100m
  • Preventive maintenance : Annual flushing to prevent blockages

Advantages:

  • Deep cleaning of pipe walls
  • Long range (up to 100m)
  • Very effective on grease
  • Lasting preventive effect

Limitations:

  • Higher cost
  • Requires access to inspection chamber
  • Risk on severely damaged pipes

EFFECTIVENESS COMPARISON

Here's how the two methods perform by blockage type:

PRICE COMPARISON

The cost depends on the technique used and the complexity of the intervention:

ELECTRIC DRAIN SNAKE

Sink / Basin239 EUR
Shower / Bathtub239 EUR
WC / Toilet239 EUR

Ideal for common and localized blockages.

HIGH PRESSURE

For main drain lines and preventive maintenance.

HOW WE CHOOSE FOR YOU

When you call us, we ask a few questions to determine the best approach:

  1. Which fixture is affected? A single sink suggests a localized blockage (snake). Multiple fixtures indicate a problem on the common drain line (possibly high pressure).
  2. How long has it been going on? A recent blockage is often mechanical (snake). An old blockage may be encrusted grease (high pressure).
  3. What may have fallen in? Identifiable object = snake. Progressive buildup = depends on context.
  4. Is your installation old? Old pipes don't handle high pressure well.

Note: In 70% of cases, we start with the snake (faster, less expensive). If that's not enough, we switch to high pressure at no additional diagnostic charge.

SUMMARY

  • Electric drain snake : Solid blockages, narrow pipes, standard interventions
  • High pressure : Grease, main drain lines, preventive maintenance
  • The choice depends on the diagnosis, not the price
  • We always recommend the most suitable solution
